CONCRETE RUNWAY

When the streets are your runway......

PROJECT RUNWAY ALL-STARS FINALE: MICHAEL

I wasn’t crazy about Michael’s collection. It’s not that it was a bad collection by any means but it was a little too commercial and too already done. He didn’t give us anything new. Yes, his pieces were pretty but I felt like I’d seen them on a DVF or Michael Kors runway already and I was really rooting for him. I did love the vests he put on the models and the safari theme. I also loved the different animal prints he used.

Project Runway All-Stars Episode 10

This weeks challenge called for the designers to make a ready-to-wear dresses to be sold at Nanette Lepores store using her textiles for charity. Not my favorite episode and to be honest none of them wowed me. And I didn’t like any of the models styling. So this post will probably be short.

(From L to R)

Michael- I liked this but we’ve seen this from him before so it was kind of boring and expected. Wasn’t crazy about the print, but I didn’t hate it. I didn’t think this design was very commercial though. The slit in the front was fine and gave just the right amount of sex appeal but the open back was too much and everyone can’t pull that off.

Kenley- (Loser) FINALLY! After weeks of saying it, Kenley finally got sent home. Of course she did the same silhouette and the same dress. This time she used a print that when sewn looked disconcerting. I found this dress also boring and expected. Not sad to see her go.

Mondo- (Winner) I think Mondo’s was the most different out of all of the designs but it’s not my favorite. I don’t mind mixing patterns but to me, this outfit looked like a big eyesore. There’s a lot going on. I would’ve liked this dress better if the ruffle wasn’t at the bottom, there were fewer colors and if he had belted it.

Austin- The instant he said swing coat, I checked out. The coat when belted looked fine, nothing spectacular but the judges said exactly what I said when he said he was making a swing coat, that it looked a little old. I need Austin to step it up a little bit more. There’s ways of being modern while being vintage.

So the prediction I made towards the beginning came true, the final 3 are Austin, Mondo, and Michael. I could’ve saved myself 10 weeks of nonsense since from the beginning, they’ve showed the most promise. Can’t wait to see next week’s Battle of the Queens. And it will be great because they all give us something different. Mondo will give us edgy and chic, Austin will show classic and sophisticated, and Michael will serve up sex and drapery. Can’t wait!

Project Runway All-Stars Episode 9

Sorry this one is so late but I was away this weekend.

So this weeks challenge, the designers had to make an avant garde garment made with lights. Pharrell Williams was the guest judge and the winner of this challenge would have their garment worn by one of Pharrell’s artists. This weeks drama was Michael Costello didn’t have a clue what to do and we learn that Austin’s mom (who looks like his sister) is having really bad financial problems. I liked every dress this week but that doesn’t mean they were without their issues.

(From L to R)

Kenley-The first outfit of hers I actually like! I still want her to go home but I thought this was a great dress. I also loved the fact she made the plaid pattern on the dress out of neon tape. I also loved her styling.

Austin- (Winner)I agree that Austin’s win was deserved. The concept of his dress was that he wanted it to look like space and the Heavens, and I think it turned out great. I loved the fact he didn’t fold and use neons like everyone else but I do agree that in the light, the lights on the dress look thrown on and not very pretty.

Mondo-The first word that comes to mind is safe. The dress wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great and it wasn’t terribly avant garde. I know Mondo can do sooo much better.

Jerell- (Loser)I agree that out of the 5, his was the worst but it wasn’t horrible. I liked the corset and neckpiece but I agree it looked so much better when he shortened the dress and I agree the glasses and mouth light were unnecessary.

Michael-Even though it was in the Bottom 2, I liked this Ninja inspired outfit. I wish those flashing lights weren’t on the inside of the shoulders and the tape wrapped around the arms was atrocious but the dress itself was good and reminded me of that one dress McQueen had that glowed in the dark.

Overall, it’s shaping up that the Final 3 will be the 3 I predicted from the start- Austin, Michael, and Mondo. So let’s hope Kenley goes home next week. I have a felling they’re gonna rig it so she stays and Michael goes because they’ll think they need a woman in the finale and Austin and Mondo are too strong of designers to get rid of.

And for the hell of it, hottie Pharrell Williams….shirtless.

Project Runway All-Stars Episode 8

Each designer was to choose a nation’s flag and interpret a dress from it, using all the colors of the flag. Pretty straight forward. This week’s “drama” was that Austin bought his fabrics and after getting to the workroom, realized he didn’t really have a design. He finally gets one but ends up rushing it and it looked a mess! Catherine Malandrino was the guest judge. Also, Joanne went on this rant (even in the after show) about them making dresses that you can’t wear a bra in and that got old real quick. Especially because we live in the 21st Century. There’s a bra for EVERY type of garment!

Winner: Mondo (Jamaica)

Agree. It’s a gorgeous dress, fits the model like a dream, and even though you can’t tell, the detailing id really great. One of my favs of the night. I’m hoping this is his season to win (as he was robbed his season). I also loved his models dredlocked hair before the runway show and before he put that wrap on her head.

Loser: Mila (Papua New Guinea)

FINALLY! I think Mila should have been sent home AGES ago! But his week she met her demise. The idea behind this dress, I love, but her actual execution of it….eh.

Favorites: Aside from Mondo, I also loved

Michael. Greece. The judges thought this dress had too much volume, hated the bow, and looked too pageant……WTF?! Did not understand that AT ALL! First of all, OK the dress is huge but if he would have belted it or brought it in at the waist, the wouldn’t care. The bow is fine. They’re being ridiculous. And what the hell kind of pageant girl could get away with wearing this (especially if you see the back, which is VERY low)? Along with Mondo, this is in my Top 2.

Jerell. India. Surprise! Another dress by Jerell I like! Was in the Bottom 2. Judges said it was too literal, too costumey, too much going on. I really like the look. it’s a flag challenge, OF COURSE he was going to be literal! Now I will agree with the judges when they said the draping distracts from the dress, and the white trim down the sleeve is poorly done. I LOVED this dress when they showed it before they went to the runway and it didn’t have the draping. The shoes are also really wrong.

QUESTION……

I must have fallen and bumped my head because everyone RAVED about Kenley’s Chile-inspired dress but I hated it! i thought maybe it’s cuz I don’t like her but no, I don’t like this dress either. Aside from the fact she’s driving me nuts with doing the same look and polka dots EVERY episode, I don’t like this look. Sorry. The fabrics and the change of texture, it just seems weird and incomplete and I’ve seen dresses like this before that I liked but not this. I’m sooo ready for her to go home.

Since next week will begin the Final 5, I’ll put up the photos of all of the designers.

Project Runway All-Stars Episode 7

The challenge this week was to create a garment to be worn during a Broadway performance for an actress in “Godspell”. The character is a rich, conniving woman who dresses very over the top and garish. This opened up Austin to start the repeated use of large, pretentious words and what not. Drama this week was Joanna telling Kara she wasn’t being ambitious enough (duh!), Mondo not knowing what he was gonna make (which already lets you know he’s either gonna win or lose), and Mila thinking Kara and Kenley’s relationship is unhealthy.

Winner: Mondo

Agreed. He had the best design. I loved it and I would wear it to a nice park picnic with my girls. Only thing I hate it the feathers on the jacket. I think they look tacky. Oh and I LOVE the Dior hair!

Loser: Kara

I somewhat disagree. I actually liked Kara’s outfit. I agree when the judges said this was Kara’s best outfit so far. I agree when they said he construction was off. I didn’t agree that between her and Mila, she should’ve went home. Mila and Kenley should already be gone, not Michael and Rami. Speaking of Kenley, everyone raved about her coat but it was hideous. They said it was cut impeccably which may well be true but the actual design of a peplum coat is dated, her fabric choices were wrong, the feathers on the collar didn’t work, and if I see another fucking polka-dot dress from her, I’ll shoot myself. GO HOME KENLEY!

Favorites:

Austin. The runner-up. I LOVE this look but I have to say his inspiration of Marie Antoinette is soooooo wrong. Firstly, Marie wouldn’t have worn these colors before the death of her son, and secondly, the design doesn’t look like the right time period. If anything, with the colors, hat, and design, this outfit is more Medieval than French Revolution. I also don’t like how the legs of his jumpsuit stop mid-calf. That makes it look juvenile to me as I don’t think fitted fabric (like leggings) that stop mid-calf doesn’t look adult. Other than that, I love.

Jerell. The second outfit from him I’ve liked. My problem with Jerell (other than the fact I just don’t like his clothes) is that I don’t know who his customer is. I don’t know who’s wearing his clothes.

Michael. I liked this look, didn’t love it. I love the feather hairpiece but I hate these fucking ring hats he keeps making!
